  An elderly relative presented to Dr. Durbin with intense shoulder and hip pain, muscle wasting, severe fatigue, and water retention in feet and lungs that worsened markedly over a period of several weeks. Durbin ordered an x-ray and concluded the problem was osteoarthritis. Weeks passed, and in subsequent visits he recommended topical ointments and stretching. He discussed physical therapy, but did not follow through. Patient was advised to exercise. When asked to consider ordering a sed rate test, Durbin declined, predicting it would only confirm his diagnosis of (non-inflammatory) osteoarthritis. Six weeks after Durbin's diagnosis and subsequent "treatment", relative's condition worsened. Family intervened and transported relative to a hospital emergency room, where he was immediately administered a sed rate, which tested off the charts for inflammation. Relative was administered prednisone and found immediate relief from pain and fluid retention. Could raise arms over head within 12 hours. Was released from hospital after four days' stay. Relative now takes prednisone daily, and has regained mobility, but suffers permanent heart damage and marked muscle wasting, which cardiologist and new G.P. indicate was worsened by time lost to incorrect diagnosis. Will not set foot in this doctor's office again.
